Much of what you read and see in the mainstream media is spin and nonsense. Fairness and Accuracy in Reporting or “FAIR” has been keeping tabs on the media since 1986 by thoroughly documenting the bias in mainstream media outlets.

The Visual Thesaurus used to be free but now they require you to subscribe to the service ($19.95/year online). The site is an interesting read and even the free version is fun though limited.

The History of Economic Thought and the International Trade Theory and Policy Analysis sites contain lots of wonky information on how and why the economy works. Or doesn’t.

The Online Index of Western Symbols and Ideograms is a great collection of symbols for all kinds of words, phrases and ideas. The Random Sign generator is a fun toy; there is also a graphic index. I came across this while contemplating ideas for a logo.

Some pretty dry reading about investment theory will help you get through an introductory Finance class but the Time Value of Money is something everyone should understand.
